A devastating incident unfolded in Pennsylvania during the weekend as a flash flood surged through the streets, engulfing cars and inundating homes. The abrupt and intense rainfall caught 11 cars off-guard, as they were parked on the General Washington Memorial Boulevard.
The tragedy has resulted in a death toll of five, with a few individuals still unaccounted for. Among the lives lost in this unforeseen deluge is Katie Seley, a 32-year-old mother from South Carolina who was visiting her relatives with her family when the calamity struck.
In the midst of this heartbreaking event, Katie lost her life, leaving behind her husband, Jim Sheils, their oldest son, Jack, aged 4, and her 62-year-old mother, Dahlia. Thankfully, Jim, Jack, and Dahlia managed to survive the devastating flood. The tragedy unfolded when Katie and her mother were attempting to ensure the safety of the other two children, Mattie and Conrad, but the raging floodwaters overwhelmed them.
Though the family has chosen not to address the media directly, they have designated a spokesperson to share their account of what transpired. According to the spokesperson, the family was on a visit to Pennsylvania, intending to join family and friends for a barbeque when the unexpected and forceful surge of water struck them.
Thankfully, Dahlia, the grandmother, displayed remarkable resilience and managed to extricate herself from the torrential current. She received prompt medical attention at a nearby hospital. Search teams arrived swiftly after the flood subsided and tragically discovered Katie’s lifeless body amid the wreckage left behind by the sudden storm. Regrettably, the family’s other two children, Mattie and Conrad, have not been located yet.
How a Vacation Turned into a Nightmare
Katie, her husband, their three children, and Katie’s mother were enjoying a visit with relatives when an unexpected flash flood struck, catching them completely off guard. The family was inside their car when the floodwaters surged through the streets, creating a perilous situation. Acting quickly, Jim managed to get his eldest son to safety while Katie and her mother attempted to reach the other two kids.
Amid this challenging time, the family expressed deep gratitude to the community for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in helping them remain resilient.
Despite Katie’s mother also escaping the rushing water, tragically, Katie and her two young children were unable to reach safety in time and were swept away in the forceful flood. Subsequently, Katie’s lifeless body was discovered, having succumbed to the deluge. Search teams had to carefully comb through the wreckage left behind by the flood to locate her.
Reflecting on the incident, the family shared their account, emphasizing that they never intentionally drove into a street filled with water. The flash flood emerged suddenly, surrounding their vehicle while they were simply driving along, nearly carrying them away in the powerful current.
Following the safe evacuation of Jim, his mother-in-law, and his eldest son to a secure location, search teams arrived to provide assistance. However, due to the intensity of the flood, they had to temporarily suspend their efforts. The family reassured everyone that the search operations would resume promptly the following day, and a press conference was scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Washington Crossing United Methodist Church to provide updates.
Capturing the sheer force of the flood, pictures of the aftermath showcased the immense power of the water. Numerous cars were overturned, tree branches were ripped off, and numerous local houses were filled with floodwater, causing significant damage to the local infrastructure. The search teams had no choice but to halt their efforts until the torrential waters receded to a safer level.
The rescue operations could only recommence once the weather improved and the floodwaters subsided. When conditions became favorable, the rescue crews promptly deployed boats to scour the Delaware River and utilized a team of drones to meticulously search the affected area.
The Ongoing Search
Although Katie’s body has been found, an extensive and ongoing search is still underway for the two missing children, aged nine months and two years old. In the wake of this tragedy, surviving family members expressed their gratitude to everyone involved in the rescue efforts. A spokesperson conveyed their appreciation, stating:
“Their compassion, kindness, and bravery have given us strength in this unspeakably difficult time, and their commitment to bringing Conrad and Mattie home is unwavering. We are thankful that they were able to save so many affected by these unprecedented floods.”

Tragically, Katie was not the only person who lost their life in the flood. Four other individuals also perished, namely Enzo Depiero, a 78-year-old man from Newtown Township, Linda Depiero, a 74-year-old woman from Newtown Township, Susan Barnhart, a 53-year-old woman from Titusville NJ, and Yuko Love, a 64-year-old woman from Newtown Township. The impact of this disaster has been deeply felt by multiple families and the broader community.
Time Brewer, the Upper Makefield Fire Chief, shared his perspective on the flood, emphasizing its sudden and devastating nature, which caused an unimaginable amount of damage to local properties. He compared it to the unexpected natural disaster of Hurricane Ida but acknowledged that the flood had proven to be even more destructive. In his 44 years of experience, he remarked, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The Sheils family expressed their profound gratitude to all those involved in the efforts to rescue those affected by the flood. They conveyed their heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming support received from the community and people across the nation, as well as their deep gratitude towards all the first responders.
