Malia Obama, 25, debuts new name as she begins Hollywood career

Malia Obama, once known as the daughter of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, has stepped into the limelight in her own right. Her recent directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival marks a significant milestone in her journey toward independence and creative expression.

And she’s even decided to change her name!

Born Malia Ann Obama on July 4, 1998, Malia grew up under the intense scrutiny of the public eye.

Her middle name, Ann, serves as a tribute to her paternal grandmother, who passed away from ovarian cancer when Malia was just a child.

Despite the pressures of her family’s prominent position, Malia navigated her upbringing with grace and resilience and opted to explore a career in screenwriting.

In her directorial debut, titled The Heart, Malia introduces audiences to her unique vision and narrative voice.

Notably, she chose to omit her family surname from the film’s credits, signaling a deliberate departure from her political legacy…

Instead she adopted the pseudonym Malia Ann.

This bold move reflects Malia’s desire to be recognized for her talents and achievements on merit alone.

The Heart explores themes of love, loss, and resilience, drawing inspiration from Malia’s personal experiences and observations.

As both director and screenwriter, she brings a fresh perspective to the cinematic landscape, challenging conventional storytelling norms and stereotypes.

Prior to The Heart, Malia made waves in the entertainment industry with her contributions to the writing team of the series Swarm, which premiered on Amazon Prime. Her creativity and wit were lauded by colleagues, further solidifying her reputation as a promising talent to watch.

“Some of her pitches were wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny. She’s an incredible writer,” Swarm co-creator Janine Nabers told E! Online about Malia’s talent. “She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft.”

“We can’t be easy on her just because she’s the [former] President’s daughter,” he admitted to Vanity Fair. “Nah, she’s very down to earth and cool. So, it’s not a problem at all.”

Barack and Michelle Obama have been vocal in their support of Malia’s aspirations, celebrating her achievements and milestones with pride and affection.

That’s what they posted on her recent 25th birthday:
